NEWARK, Del. – Delaware scored the first five runs of the game but UNCW rallied with two big innings to defeat the Blue Hens, 7-5, Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.

Delaware (19-24, 5-10 CAA) took the lead in the bottom of the first when Halle Kisamore singled, moved to second on a Seahawks error, and scored on a two-out single to rightcenter by Karolina Flores.

Brittney Mendoza opened the bottom of the second with a double, and after moving to third on an error, she beat the throw to the plate on a groundball to first by Sarah Coyne (St Georges). Reyna de Jesus then scored on a Hanna Garber groundout to give the Blue Hens a 3-0 advantage.

de Jesus added a two-run single to leftcenter in the third, driving home Anna Steinmetz and Mendoza to put Delaware up five.

UNCW (24-23, 6-9 CAA) answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth, ignited by RBI singles from Anna Hessenthaler and Kali Jones.

The Seahawks then went ahead in the top of the sixth, as Hunter Bizzell scored on a UD throwing error before Jada Santiago and Hannah Adamczyk delivered RBI singles. Seahawks reliever Laurel Koontz, who allowed just one hit in 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, set the Blue Hens down in order during the final two frames to seal the victory.

Six Blue Hens recorded a hit on the afternoon, while de Jesus drove home two and Mendoza scored twice.
