Women’s Lacrosse Secures No. 3 Seed in Postseason with 17-9 CAC

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team locked up the third seed in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 17-9 victory over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

With the win, the Wildcats (9-7, 6-2 CACC) will have a home game in the CACC Tournament First Round on Tuesday afternoon, playing against the sixth seed which is yet to be determined.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats scored the final six goals of the first half to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 10-5 halftime lead. Chestnut Hill did not score from the 12:43 mark left in half until 1:18 into the second half.

After the Griffins scored to open the second half, the Wildcats rattled off five more, capping an 11-1 stretch that gave the home team a 15-6 lead with 19:39 left in regulation. The Griffins scored three of the next four goals to keep it under a 10-goal deficit, but they wouldn’t be able to find the back of the net for the final 11:57 of the contest.

Eight different Wildcats tallied a point on Tuesday, led by seven different goal scorers.  Brooke Siebert led the team with seven points, scoring four goals while adding three assists, seven ground balls, seven draws, and three caused turnovers. Lashay Ross also scored a game-high four goals while adding a game high nine draw controls.

Taylor Lambeth (Appoquinimink) chipped in with three goals and two assists while both Delaney Steele (Caesar Rodney) and Maddie Day scored two goals and added one assist. Mikailla Spencer scored once while adding an assist and Maris Allen closed out the scoring with a goal. Senior Marisa Parker (Appoquinimink) dished out two assists in the win.

The Wildcats won 21 out of 28 draw controls in the contest, controlling the possession. They also out shot the Griffins, 43-22, for the game.

Maddie Hurm made four saves in the first half before turning it over to Tori Grubowski in the second half who made three stops.

The Wildcats close out the 2019 regular season on Saturday, as they head to Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut. The opening draw is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
