Dover, Del. (May 4, 2019) --- Darnell Maisonet threw 8.1 solid innings, while Miguel Rivera and Jared Gillis (Smyrna) drove in two runs each to lead Delaware State to a 6-2 victory over Coppin State in the MEAC North finale for each team at Soldier Field today. The three-game series sweep gives the Hornets a season-high six-game win streak, their longest since also winning six in a row in 2017.

Maisonet, one of five DSU seniors playing in their final home game, allowed five hits and the two Coppin State runs, while striking out seven and walking two to even his record at 2-2 this season.

He left the game to a standing ovation with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman Jeremy Carrow recorded the final two outs to seal the win for the Hornets.

Maisonet recovered nicely after a shaky start. He hit the second batter he faced and gave up a two-run homer to Coppin’s Nasir McIlwain to put the Eagles in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning.

The Hornets tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Rivera doubled to lead off the inning and scored DSU’s first run of the game when Gillis followed with a single to center. Gillis later crossed the plate on a ground out by Cole Garey to even the score.

Delaware State put three runs on the board in the fifth to take the lead for good. Mark Herron tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on a single by John Weglarz (Appoquinimink) to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. Rivera and Gillis also singled in fifth inning runs to stretch the lead to 5-2.

The Hornets their sixth run on a single by Rivera in the seventh. He was three-for-four with two RBI to raise his team-high average to .357 this season.

Gillis had two hits in four at bats, and is now 14-for-26 (.538) with a homer, two doubles and 10 RBI in the last six games to lift his season average to .308.

Todd Henry had three hits and two stolen bases in four at bats, while Herron was two-for-four in the game.

The six-game win streak gives DSU a 17-23 overall record, while the Hornets close out MEAC play with a 12-12 mark, good for third place in the final Northern Division standings.

Delaware State will close out its 2019 schedule with a non-conference game at Richmond on Tues. (May 7). Game time is 3:00 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
