DSU BASEBALL SEASON ENDS IN MEAC TOURNAMENT LOSS

Daytona Beach, Fla. (May 17, 2019) --- Delaware State held a five-run lead midway through the game, but couldn’t hold on in a 9-8 ten-inning loss to Florida A&M in a MEAC Baseball Tournament elimination game at Jackie Robinson Field today. The Hornets’ second tournament loss, each to Florida A&M, ends the season for DSU (20-25), while the Rattlers will face North Carolina A&T for the right to take on Norfolk State for the championship.

Florida A&M scored the winning run in the 10th on a one-out single by Rayburn Tuck, which scored  Octavien Moyer, who reached base on a one-out double off Hornet reliever Garrett Lawson.

Tuck was four-for-four with a homer and three runs batted in, while Moyer had three hits and two RBI in six at bats to lead the Rattlers’ 11-hit attack.

Delaware State had 13 hits in the contest. Cole Garey was three-for-five with a run batted in, John Weglarz (Appoquinimink) and Tommy Jordan had two hits and two RBI each, while Jared Gillis (Smyrna) recorded two hits in four at bats. Weglarz was 11-for-18 (.611) with a triple, double, four RBI and three runs scored in the Hornets’ four tournament games to end the season with a .348 batting average.    

The Rattlers overcame a 6-1 deficit and tied the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Florida A&M scored first with a run off Delaware State starter Corey Loper (Middletown) in the bottom of the third inning.

The Hornets responded with a six-spot in the top of the fourth to take control of the game. Jordan had a two-run double and Weglarz singled in two to highlight the rally. Rich Rountree and Adrian Hill (Polytech) also had run-scoring singles in the inning, which ended with DSU holding a 6-1 lead.

Two innings later, Florida A&M matched the Hornets with a six-run inning to pull ahead 7-6. The Rattlers had just three hits in the inning, including a two-run single by Moyer and a run-scoring hit by Tuck. Florida A&M also scored a run on a DSU error in the sixth.

The Hornets answered with two runs in their next at bat to regain the lead. Garey singled in DSU’s first seventh inning run to tie the score at 7-7 and the Hornets scored the go-ahead run when Darnell Maisonet scored on a wild pitch.

Florida A&M tied game on a two-out solo homer by Tuck off Hornet reliever Jeremy Carrow (Smyrna) in the bottom of the eighth.

Jeremiah McCollum pitched four scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out six earn the win for Florida A&M. Lawson (7-5), pitching in relief for the first time this season, was tagged with the loss for DSU.

Miguel Rivera (Polytech) had two home runs and six RBI in the tournament for the Hornets.
