10 Things to look for on the opening weekend of high school foo

302sports 423 Sep 5
The high school football season kicks off tonight and we are excited for opening weekend.  Here is a list of 10 things that i am looking forward to on this opening weekend.
  1. Kickoff Classic is back- 302 sports is partnering with the DIFCA to bring back the kickoff classic with 2 football games on Thursday night.  We have the battle of the Vikings as Christiana meets St Elizabeth's at Caravel. Both teams are heading in the right direction.  The second game is a Henlopen North vs South showdown as Lake Forest visits Polytech.
  2. No Baynard Stadium.  There is no Baynard stadium this year as it is being redone. In Week 1 St Elizabeth's will be playing its home game at Caravel while Sallies host William Penn at AI DuPont.  Howard will also play it’s home game at Caravel this weekend vs Concord
  3. Division 1 vs Division 2 Showdowns.  The opening week is always filled with interdivision battles.  These are key because you can pick up points by beating a Division 1 team.  There are 6 interdivision games this opening weekend
  4. Harvest Bowl  Middletown vs Smyrna kicks off the season in the annual Harvest Bowl,  Middletown has taken the series to Smyrna and in this game we get to see QB Davis go against an improved Smyrna defense.  Time of possession might be the key to this game.
  5. Conference Showdown We have only 3 opening weekend conference games. The big one is a Flight B battle between Glasgow and Newark.  The Yellowjackets are new to Flight B and they get to face a tough Dragons team. Newark wil also dedicate the feild for longtime former coach Butch Simpson.
  6. Friday Night Lights  This week there will be 15 games under the lights on Friday night.  There is nothing like seeing high school football under the lights on Friday night.
  7. Top 10 battles
  8. Early Start for the Senators:  One thing we see is how much of a home field adbvantage it is with the early kick off time.  Dover plays a lot of night games but a trip up North for a 10:30 kickoff won’t be easy.
  9. Defending Champs are road warriors  Sussex Central opens it’s first title defense with the first of four road games.  They will travel to play La Plata (MD) on Friday night.
  10. Weather Factors:  There is a hurricane coming up the east coast that has already changed the schedule. Two Friday night games were moved to tonight.  Cape will be home on Friday night and could that be a factor in their game vs St Georges Tech. Caravel and Woodbridge could also be affected by the weather.
