Defending State Champs Woddbridge hold of Caravel 21-20

The top-seeded Woodbridge Blue Raiders edged 6th-seeded Caravel Academy 21-20 on Friday night in the semifinals of the DIAA Division II football tournament.

The top-seeded Woodbridge Raiders would get on the board first with a 2-yard touchdown run from Tyrez Cannon taking a a 7-0 lead with 2:48 left in the first quarter.  Thats all the scoring that would take place in the first quarter of the game.

Caravel Academy would control the second quarter by scoring twice. The first touchdown would come at 4:39 when Caravel quarterback Jake Hoffman connected with Jermaine Earl for an 8-yard touchdown pass. On their next possesion Caravel would drive down the field and cap it off with a 3 yard touchdown run from Ethan Potter with 1:39 left in the first half. 

The Blue Raiders trailed in the third 14-7 but would rally for a pair of touchdowns in less than a minute to start the fourth quarter. Woodbridge tied it 14-14 with 10:38 left in the fourth quarter when quarterback Dalton Perdue rolled out on a bootleg racing 20-yards down field when he seemed to be wrapped up he then quickly lateraled to Jordan Evans, who ran the extra 5-yards for the touchdown. A few plays later, Jaquan Massey picked off a pass from Hoffman, returning it 59-yards to take their second lead of the game 21-14. 

Caravel would score a touchdown on Jermaine Earl’s 27-yard catch from Hoffman with 5:57 remaining. Caravel would then electe to go for two instead of tryng an extra point kick to tie the game. Woodbridge’s defensive line would break through the line of scrimmage gang tackling Caravels running back Ethan Potter to keep the lead at 21-20 the eventual winning score.

Woodbrigde will advance with the win to play in the DIAA Division II Football Championship Saturday November 30th at UD Stadium with game time set at 6PM. They will defend their title against the #4 seed Howard Wildcats.
