Middletown Cavaliers reeled off 28 points to advance with a 48-

The Middletown Cavaliers reeled off 28 points to advance with a 48-28 victory over the Smyrna Eagles in the DIAA Division I state semifinals on Friday night.

Senior Jaheim Wing scored three touchdowns int he game for Middeltown, including one on a 3-Yard run that would put the Cavaliers up 26-20. On the Next posession Senior Najiar Smith took the hand off 60 yards for a TD to make it 34-20 Cavaliers Lead

Smyrna’s Devin Smith, answered right back as he returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. They would also convert the two-point conversion as Wayne Knight threw a pass to Espie Hart to get the Eagles back to make the score 34-28.

Smyrna would try an onsides kick on the ensuing kickoff as time was running out for them. However the Cavaliers would recover to regain posession. On the next play from scrimmage Middletowns quarterback Jaden Davis would throw a screen pass to Isaiah Griffin, who turned it into a 49-yard touchdown making the score 40-28

Finally, the Cavaliers would seal the win as Michael Pearson scooped up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown that stretched Middletown’s advantage to 48-28 after he sucessful extra point with just 6:00 left on the clock.

Smyrna had won nine games in a row since starting the season at 0-2. One of those losses, was a 17-6 loss to Middletown in the season-opener the Harvest Bowl. The win was Middletown’s second win over Smyrna this season which sends the Cavs to their third state finals in the past four years. The Eagles would have an eight-game state tournament winning streak snapped with the loss.

Middletown advances to next Saturday’s Division I state championship game, which will be played at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium. The Cavaliers (10-1) will play the top-seeded Hodgson (10-0).
