Jabre Lolley (St.Marks) and Shepherd Football Knocks Off West Virginia State

      SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. Senior quarterback Connor Jessop (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run /Virginia Tech) completed 26-of-38  passes for 283 yards and five touchdowns, while senior running back Jabre Lolley (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) rushed 18 times for a career-high 239 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University (3-0, 3-0 MEC) to a 56-41 win over West Virginia State (1-3, 1-3 MEC) in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. 

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Jessop teamed with senior wide receiver Antonio Smith (California, Md./Great Mills) on a seven-yard scoring pass with 4:43 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Zach Wise (Berkeley Springs, W.Va./Berkeley Springs) added the extra point.

Jessop fired a six-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Wanya Allen (Sterling, Va/Potomac Falls) with six seconds left in the first quarter to up the lead to 14-0.

Aaron Ball nailed a 23-yard field goal for the Yellow Jackets with 10:46 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-3.

West Virginia State scored on a 24-yard fumble return by Trent Williamson with 10:28 left in the second quarter to make it 14-10.

Jessop and Allen combined on 10-yard scoring play with 9:05 left in the second quarter to give Shepherd a 21-10 lead.

Matt Kinnick teamed with Rhys Jelich on a one-yard scoring pass with 3:09 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-17.

West Virginia State took advantage of a Shepherd turnover and scored when Kinnick teamed with Quinton Gray on 13-yard scoring pass to take a 24-21 lead with 1:58 left in the second quarter.

Lolley scored on a four-yard run with 1:00 left in the half to give Shepherd a 28-24 lead at the break.

Jessop found sophomore wide receiver Shaquon Dyson (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) in the back of the end zone for a 18-yard  touchdown with 11:38 left in the third quarter to give Shepherd a 35-24 advantage.

Calil Wilkins ran 25 yards for a score for State with 8:14 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 35-31.

Lolley rambled 13 yards for a touchdown to give the Rams a 42-31 lead with 5:47 left in the third quarter.

Ball connected on a 36-yard field goal with 12:02 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 42-34.

Jessop fired a six-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) with 8:09 left in the quarter to up the Shepherd lead to 49-34.

Kinnick teamed with Tyrell Henderson on a 44-yard score with 1:56 remaining to cut the lead to 49-41.

Lolley scored his third touchdown of the day with 1:29 remaining to complete the scoring.

Kinnick completed 32-of-51 passes for 371 yards for West Virginia State.

Wilkins rushed 16 times for 91 yards for the Yellow Jackets.

Feiss led the Shepherd receivers with 10 catches for 168 yards. Allen added four receptions for 45 yards. Henderson had 11 catches for 166 yards for the Yellow Jackets.

Shepherd gained 595 yards of total offense, while West Virginia State had 492.

Senior inside linebacker James Gupton (Waldorf, Md./North Point) led the Shepherd defense with 11 tackles (seven solos). Junior defensive end Myles Humphrey (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise) added 10 stops (nine solos). He also recorded a pair of sacks. Moises Valcarcel had six tackles (all solos) to pace the Yellow Jackets.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Concord for a noon contest.
