Longhorns Lead, Grier Injured For WVU

Two long scoring drives have given Texas a 14-0 halftime lead over West Virginia here at Milan Puskar Stadium this afternoon.

But the story in the first half was the dislocated figure suffered by starting quarterback Will Grier in the first quarter when he reached out to try and score a touchdown from the 1.

The official on the field initially awarded a touchdown for Grier, but the replay official upstairs ruled Grier lost the ball as he extended it toward the pylon and the ball was given to Texas on the 20.

More damaging than the lost points, however, was the loss of the nation's No. 2-ranked touchdown passer. He immediately went into the locker room after the play.

Texas responded with a pair of long scoring drives keyed by its backup quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who accounted for both Longhorn touchdowns on passes of 4 yards to tight end Kendall Moore and 20 yards to running back Chris Warren III late in the second quarter.

Ehlinger, stepping in for starter Shane Buechele, completed 8-of-10 passes for 111 yards and ran six times for 46 yards.

West Virginia, with backup quarterback Chris Chugunov in the game for the first time since the Delaware State game played here on Sept. 16, led the offense to a couple of first downs, but it was clear the Mountaineers were playing things conservatively.

Including last weekend's second-half shutout at Kansas State, the West Virginia offense has now gone scoreless for four straight quarters.

Texas deferred the opening kickoff and will receive the ball at the start of the second half.
