WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATED BY VIRGINIA TECH, 84-34

Outscoring the Hawks in all four quarters, the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Tuesday night, 84-34.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Outscoring the Hawks in all four quarters, the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Tuesday night, 84-34. Virginia Tech's Taylor Emery scored 22 points in the first half to help build the lead. In the Hawks' first home game in 26 days, junior Erica Balman led the team with seven points, while sophomore Alexa Middleton led the team with seven rebounds. Tuesday was the first game at the helm for Jody Craig, who assumed all head coaching responsibilities on Friday afternoon. Monmouth dropped to 2-8 on the season, and will host George Washington on December 22 for the last non-conference game of the year.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES
"We showed glimpses of playing to the level we need to on both ends of the floor. I thought we generated better shots on offense with less turnovers, but we obviously need to be able to finish better than we did. -After Rosa Graham opened up the scoring with a driving layup, Virginia Tech went on a 9-0 run, forcing Monmouth to take a timeout with 6:37 left in the first quarter.
-At the end of the first quarter, Monmouth fell behind 24-7, shooting just 3-15 from the field. Virginia Tech's Taylor Emery scored 15 points in the first frame.
-The Hokies doubled up the Hawks in the second quarter by a score of 24-12, and took a 48-19 halftime lead.
-The teams took a low-scoring third quarter into the media timeout, with VT outscoring the Hawks 6-4. However, the Hokies went on an 11-0 run and held Monmouth without a point over a span of 7:37 to take a 61-25 lead into the final frame.
-Virginia Tech used a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 75-27 lead, and eventually took the 84-34 win.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Monmouth shot just 14-58 (24%) from the field and 2-17 (12%) from three.
-The Hawks dropped to 0-15 all-time against ACC opponents.
-Monmouth was outrebounded for just the fourth time this season (49-32 margin tonight).
-Virginia Tech's Taylor Emery scored 25 points on 9-13 from the floor, while Regan Magarity registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
-The Hawks have committed more turnovers than their opponent in all 10 games this season.

UP NEXT
The Hawks will remain at the OceanFirst Bank Center to host George Washington on December 22.  Monmouth holds a 2-1 all-time series advantage over George Washington, and the teams will meet for the first time since 1985.
