Reading, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2018) - Senior Alex Shippen scored a game-high 25 points and went over 1,000 for his career as Alvernia University (5-8) knocked off Penn State-Berks (1-10) by a 99-60 final Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's basketball at Jack McCloskey Court.

Needing 19 points to become the 26th player to reach 1,000 career points at Alvernia, Shippen tallied 18 in the first half as Alvernia built a 54-24 lead at the break.  His jumper in the lane with 15:44 left in the game gave him 20 for the game and put him over a grand for his career.

Berks kept pace early, but a Nick Youngkin 3 with 14:22 left in the first half to give Alvernia a 19-10 lead.  The lead swelled to 17 points, 31-14, on a Nik Henson free throw with 6:50 left in the first half, and the Golden Wolves got bookend 3s from Shippen and fellow senior--and 1,000 point scorer--Mike Miller in capping the half with a 16-5 run.

Berks hit a 3 after the Shippen jumper early in the second half, but Alvernia answered with nine straight points and kept the lead over 30 the rest of the way.

Calil Moultrie joined Shippen in double digits with 14 points and Keon Taylor (Mount Pleasant) added 13 points in 14 minutes.  Freshman Kyle Gordon recorded his first career double-double in his first career start with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Alvernia keeps an aggressive schedule of three games in four days going on Tuesday when it hosts Penn State-Wilkes Barre.
