WidenerMBB Drops Heartbreaker to Hood at Buzzer

CHESTER, Pa.Tyler Drews scored a game-high 26 points, but the Widener University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in a MAC Commonwealth game to the Hood Blazers on Saturday afternoon by a 77-75 final.
The two teams were locked in a close battle early with the Pride holding a slim 11-10 lead seven minutes in before going on a 16-8 run to open a 27-18 advantage with just less than six minutes to go. The Blue and Gold pushed the lead out to 10 at 36-26, but Hood rallied, scoring 13 of the next 19 points to chop the edge to three before a layup with five seconds left in the frame sent the pride into the locker room up 44-39.
After Widener scored the opening bucket of the second half, Hood went on an 8-0 run to take a 47-46 lead. Neither team held more than a four point lead in the final 16 minutes as the squads traded baskets. With the Blazers leading 76-73, the Pride missed a handful of shots, but kept crashing the glass, eventually getting a layup with 10 seconds left to cut the lead to one. After a Hood free throw made it a two-point game, Widener missed a shot, but the ball went out of bounds off the Blazers. A last second layup attempt rolled off the back rim, narrowly missing sending the game to overtime.

  • Drew's 26 points marked the eighth time this season he has topped 20 or more for the season.
  • Sardayah Sambo (Middletown) tallied 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four blocks. His 12th point of the night was the 1,200th of his career, making him just the 16th player in program history to reach the mark.
  • Sam Smith scored 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from distance. Elijah Boyd added 10 in the game.
  • The Blue and Gold held a 36-32 rebounding advantage including 18-10 on the offensive glass.


  • Leading by a point just more than seven minutes into the game, the Pride went on a 16-8 run, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor during the span to take a 27-18 lead.
  • Hood responded, using a 13-6 run, chopping the lead to 42-39 with 23 seconds left in the half.
  • Drews scored 14 points in the half, hitting on 6-of-8 shots from the floor.
  • Sambo netted 12 to go along with three assists and three blocks. Smith went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to account for his nine points.
  • As a team, Widener shot 18-for-33 (54.5 percent) in the opening 20 minutes.
