Bears hand Delaware State 16th straight loss 61-47

(Rawls, Morgan State)

BALTIMORE, Md. (January 22, 2018) -- Morgan State came into this game looking to snap their losing streak at three. The Bears set the pace and rode it all the way to a 61-47 victory over the Delaware State tonight at Hill Field House. It marked the Hornets' 16th straight loss.

Morgan State improved to 8-12 overall and 4-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bears also extended their home record to 6-0 inside the confines of Hill Field House this season.

Unlike the previous night at Coppin State, the Bears started well by scoring the first nine points of the game.

The Hornets responded by making a couple of runs and pushed within three points on two occasions. The first was on a three-pointer by Pinky Wiley with 13:32 left. Then Wiley connected again. This time on a lay-up with the assist coming from Joe Lewis after he stole a ball from Phillip Carr. Wiley led the Hornets with 11 points. It was only 21-18 in favor of the Bears with 5:03 left in the first half.

Morgan State pushed back by scoring nine of the last 14 points of the first half to stay ahead 30-23 at halftime.

The Bears slowed the pace down a little bit tonight, which was also a huge difference. Also, the defensive effort was pretty noticeable according to Carr.

"It was a better defensive effort tonight," said Carr. "We definitely crashed the boards harder. We held them to (47) points. That's the best effort we've had in probably eight games. We just need to continue building on that and play harder."

Delaware State (2-20, 0-7 MEAC) rallied to within four after a three-point shot from Artem Tavakalyan made it 38-34 with 14:25 left. But the backbreaking blow was delivered by the Bears as they scored the next 13 points.

It started with two consecutive three-point baskets from Antonio Gillespie, a free throw from Alex Ennis and then two straight three-pointers from Kyson Rawls (St Georges), who scored all 11 of his points in the second half. The last one from Rawls gave the Bears a 51-34 lead with 9:11 left in the game. That run put the Hornets away.

"I thought Kyson did a great job for us," said coach Todd Bozeman regarding the play of Rawls. "I always knew he could shoot the ball. He got hurt early in the season. And then you're not in the best of shape. So he had to get himself in shape. Then you got to deal with your coach that's always pressing you about learning probably the toughest position in basketball which is the point guard."

Carr led the Bears with his 10th double-double of the season, recording 13 points and 12 rebounds. Tiwian Kendley also led with 13 points.

Johquin Wiley scored 11 points for Delaware State in the 97th series meeting. The Hornets were just 16-of-53 shooting (30.2 percent), including 3 of 15 from distance.

Morgan State takes a week off before South Carolina State comes to Hill Field House on January 29th at 7:30 p.m.
