Pride Roars Back as @WidenerMBB Downs Alvernia with Second Half Senior Day Rally

CHESTER, Pa. – Sardayah Sambo (Middletown) led all scorers with 19 points while pulling in nine rebounds and blocking five shots as the Widener University men's basketball team rallied for a 74-59 Senior Day win against the Alvernia Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game the team honored Sambo and Sam Smith for their career efforts.
 
HIGHLIGHTS

  • Connor Laverty netted a career-high 16 points in the game, 14 of them in the second half.
  • Tyler Drews also reached double figures with 12 while Ryan McMahon had 10 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.
  • Widener shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) in the second half, ourscoring the Golden Wolves 48-26.
  • The Pride held a 44-36 advantage overall on the glass.

 
FIRST HALF NOTES

  • Widener found itself in a tight battle early, but led 15-14 before a 16-7 Alvernia run that spanned 9:18 gave the Golden Wolves a 30-22 lead with two minutes to go before AU went into halftime up 33-26.
  • Sambo netted 10 in the first half to go along with three blocks.
  • 20 of the 26 points for the Blue and Gold came in the paint.

 
SECOND HALF NOTES

  • The Golden Wolves extended their lead early in the frame as back-to-back layups put them up 43-32 four minutes into the half.
  • Widener stormed back, using a 21-6 spurt to go up by a point at 50-49.
  • After trading baskets, the Pride closed the contest on a 18-3 run in the final six minutes.
  • Free throws down the stretch were a key as the Blue and Gold hit 7-of-10 from the stripe in the final run while Alvernia went 0-for-6.

 
UP NEXT
Despite the win, based on the other results of the day from around the MAC Commonwealth, Widener did not qualify for the conference championship. The Pride now wait to see if it will receive a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
