Power Pushes Pride Past Eagles

CHESTER, Pa. – Three players hit home runs for the Widener University softball team as the Pride swept a doubleheader from Eastern, winning game one 8-0 in five innings before claiming the nightcap 4-2 on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 8, Eastern 0 – 5 inninngs)

  • Widener got on the board in the opening frame as Lindsey Cooper led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Two batters later, Katie Sterling singled her home for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Pride broke the game open with five runs in the second. Keying the inning for the Blue and Gold was a leadoff homer by Rogers and a two-run double from DelRomano.
  • Another run came across in the third as Rogers was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Jess Kaczmarczyk came onto pinch run and moved to second on a single by DiMario. A groundout erased the lead runner and moved DiMario to second where she stood when Jamie Gosselin singled her home to make it 7-0.
  • Widener closed the scoring in the fourth when Benozich drove out her first homer of the season capping an 11 pitch at-bat.
  • Rabuck picked up her fourth win of the season, authoring the shutout, allowing four hits and striking out six without a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Widener 4, Eastern 2)

  • The Pride got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning.
  • Sterling extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo homer in the third. Not done, back-to-back doubles by Benzoich and Taylor Allen pushed another run across.
  • The Eagles made a game of things in the seventh with a pair of solo homers.
  • Kait Jaworski started and pitched three scoreless innings for the Pride, allowing just two hits.
  • Sydney Powell earned the win, tossing the final four innings. She retired the first nine batters she faced upon coming into the game.

The Pride returns to MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday when it travels to Arcadia for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
