NORFOLK, Virginia — Senior pitcher Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) threw a complete game and junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) capped off the day with a home run as Maryland Eastern Shore salvaged the series finale with an 8-2 win over Norfolk State Sunday (Apr. 15).

The Shore improves to 8-28 (5-10 MEAC) while the Spartans fall to 12-20 (9-6 MEAC).

DeBlasie’s round tripper in the ninth was a finishing touch, but there were plenty more noteworthy performances from the Hawks’ lineup. Freshman Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) led the charge with three hits and two runs scored. Junior Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) also chipped in a multi-hit effort with an RBI.

Hoskins struck out seven in his complete game effort, and held the Spartans to just one hit after the fourth inning. With four victories the senior has been credited with half the team’s victories.

Senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) led off the game with a double and would score when Norfolk State threw away a sacrifice bunt chance. Sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) contributed a sacrifice fly to give the Hawks a 2-0 edge before the Spartans came to bat.

Norfolk State grinded out runs in the third and fourth to tie the game. Deadlocked through five, the Hawks pounced in the sixth with a DeBlasie double. He would score on an error to give The Shore the lead. Freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) drew a bases loaded walk, and Nicastro knocked in a third run on a sacfirice bunt.

Hindsight would prove that was all the Hawks needed, but the two run bomb by DeBlasie and an RBI single from senior Isaiah Chambers(Bowie, Maryland) put the game out of reach.

Maryland Eastern Shore travels to Towson and Dover next week before hosting Delaware State on Sunday (Apr. 22) evening.
