Sterling Extends Hitting Streak for @WidenerSoftball Against Alvernia

(Sterling, Widener)

CHESTER, Pa. – Four players had multi-hit days, but the Widener University softball team fell in a doubleheader to the Alvernia Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon 6-2 and 8-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Alvernia 6, Widener 2)

  • The Golden Wolves dented the scoreboard with the initial runs of the game on a two-run homer in the fourth inning. A homer in the sixth extended the lead to 3-0.
  • Widener pushed its first runs of the game across in the sixth. With one out, Lauren DelRomano singled in front of Katie Sterling (St Georges) who doubled into the right-center gap drive in one. On the play Sterling took third on the throw to the plate. The extra base was crucial as on the final pitch of a walk to Carli Benozich, the ball kicked away from the catcher, allowing Sterling to come home, cutting the lead to 3-2.
  • Widener battled, putting runners on second and third in the seventh before the final out.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Alvernia 8, Widener 3)

  • Alvernia came out swinging scoring four runs in the top of the first.
  • Widener broke the ice in the fourth as with one out, Sterling doubled. Two batters later, Liv Rogers singled to plate the runner, cutting the lead to 4-1.
  • AU got the tally back in the fifth with a solo homer.
  • The Pride battled back, scoring twice in the fifth as an error and a walk, both with the bases loaded scored a run each.

Widener returns to action on Monday, April 16 when it hosts its Strike Out Cancer game against Penn State Brandywine. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
