Delaware Takes Down Bryant in Stony Brook Invitational Opener, 3-2

Bracken paced the match with 25 kills

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Behind 25 kills from junior Cailey Bracken, the University of Delaware volleyball team took down Bryant, 3-2 (25-15, 23-25, 29-31, 25-21, 15-11), inside Pritchard Gymnasium on the campus of Stony Brook University Friday afternoon. With the win, UD improves to 6-4 overall while Bryant dropped to 8-5 this season.

“I’m really proud of the effort in the end,” head coach Sara Matthews said. “We had a really big lead in the third set and ended up losing it. They did a good job of bouncing back and in sets four and five. Brooke (Robertson) was incredible. I’m proud of her effort. She was putting balls away for us and hit for a really high clip. She did a great job.”

Bracken’s 25 kills was a season high and match high, while senior Brooke Robertson posted 19 kills on a season-best .429 attacking clip. Junior Maria Bellinger also hit double-digit terminations with 12 of her own. In total, 10 Blue Hens recorded at least one kill today, with sophomore Julia Hayes recording six. As a team, UD outhit the Bulldogs .358 - .158 and posted 73 hammers.

“Our defense did a really good job and were aggressive the entire time,” Robertson said. “They put up a really good ball for Courtnie (Roberts) to set us really good and in system balls.”

Bracken knows what UD needs to do to keep the momentum going tomorrow.

Roberts directed the offense with 58 assists – a season high – and recorded her eighth double-double of the season after 10 digs. She’s reached the double-digit dig mark eight times this season.

Junior libero Andie Hanus led the match with 23 digs. After Roberts’ 10, freshman Samantha Davis (Ursuline) posted 7 while Bellinger added six scoops to her 12 kills. Robertson capped her quality day with five digs of her own, and 10 Blue Hens recorded at least one scoop. Hanus’ now has reached 20 or more scoops in five matches this season.

Delaware recorded eight aces on the day, with Bracken posting four of those. Robertson added two of her own while Hanus and freshman Grace Underwood each had one.

Defensively, the Blue Hens had 11 team blocks. Hayes had five – including two solo stuffs – while Underwood recorded three blocks with one solo block.

Delaware will wrap up the Stony Brook Invitational tomorrow with two matches. The Blue Hens will take on Colgate at noon and host Stony Brook at 6:30 p.m.
