Mount Pleasant remains in control of Flight B volleyball

PENNY HILL – Mount Pleasant shook off a subpar first set and defeated Dickinson, 3-1, in Blue Hen Conference Flight B volleyball on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Green Knights solidified their hold on the conference, moving one step closer to a state tournament automatic berth.

The set scores were 21-25, 25-10, 25-17,and 25-10. Individual statistics were not available for either team as of late Wednesday night.

The teams played a tight first set, with the Rams taking a four-point lead at 18-14 deep into the frame. Mount hurt itself with a number of service errors, and three straight hitting errors sent it to set point at 24-21. The Green Knights saved twice, but a tip over the block gave Dickinson the win. It was just the second set Mount Plesant had dropped all season.

The Green Knights came out firing in set number two. Gabrielle Faucet delivered two aces as they started with a 3-0 lead, and Lauren Gilligan added two more to push the advantage to 7-3. The Rams continued to struggle on the serve receive throughout the set. During one stretch, Kaitlin Schultz had five consecutive aces as the Green Knights' lead grew from 10-8 to 17-8. The set ended on, you guessed it, another ace, this one from Madelyn Frank.

One of Mount Pleasant's strengths this season is their height, and that came into play in the third. Zaria Newson smacked down an overpass early to give the Knights an 8-6 lead, and they used a 12-1 run to extend their lead from 9-8 to 21-9. Defense played a role during that run, as Newson had at least one block, and she had help from her mates on the front line. The Rams cut the lead with a late surge, but the deficit was too much.

The fourth set was all Green Knights, who improved to 8-0 on the season. They are 4-0 in Flight B with three conference matches remaining, one of those being at home Monday at 4:45 p.m. against Glasgow. Christiana is 4-1 in the conference, with the Vikings' only loss coming to Mount. Brandywine is 2-1 in Flight B; the Bulldogs and Green Knights do not meet until Oct. 26.

Dickinson fell to 1-6. The Rams are home against St. Georges on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.
