Field Hockey Picks Up Dramatic Win on Senior Night

(Kulesza, Neumann)

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University field hockey team picked up a thrilling win on Senior Night on Wednesday evening, taking down visiting Wesley College in double overtime by a score of 2-1.

Senior Chelsea Kulesza (St Elizabeths) made the most of her senior night, scoring both Neumann goals in the win. Lizzie Yupicked up the victory in net, stopping two shots in goal.

Neumann came out eager to honor its seniors, outshooting the Wolverines by a count of 9-2 in the opening half. The hosts early pressure resulted in the game's first goal just 4:50 into play, as Kulesza ripped home a goal off a feed from Sam Picker to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. Neumann had several chances to double its lead late in the half, but could not find the back of the net as the game remained 1-0 heading to halftime.

Wesley responded with a much better effort in the second half. Looking to tie the contest up, the Wolverines applied significant pressure in the Neumann end for large stretches of the period. The visitors were finally rewarded for their effort at the 42:33 mark of the second stanza, as they tied the contest up at one apiece and set the stage for a dramatic finish.

Neither team could break the dead-lock in regulation, so overtime was needed to break the tie. In a back and forth session that saw both teams create chances, Neumann capitalized on its second shot of the extra session. With just 0:29 seconds left in the first overtime, Kulesza smacked home her second goal of the game to send the Knights home with the win.

Neumann (7-6, 4-1 Atlantic East) will now have a week off before facing rival Gwynedd Mercy University next Wednesday, October 24th. Game-time for the Atlantic East Conference showdown is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
