  • Messiah Finishes Off 68-63 Win At Alvernia

                                                                     Reading, Pa. (Dec. 8, 2018) - Messiah College (5-5, 2-1) closed the game with seven of the last eight points in the final two minutes for a 68-63 win over Alvernia University (3-6, 0-4) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.Alvernia sophomore  (Mount Pleasant) scored on a driving floater with 2:18 to play to put the Golden Wolves up 62-61, but Messiah answered right back on a 3 from Zach McDonough from the right corner to go back up 64-62.Both teams came up empty on their next possessions and Taylor hit a free throw to pull within one.  Alvernia forced a turnover but gave it right back then Messiah missed a layup, but another Alvernia turnover left the Wolves down a point.Colin Sareyka hit a pair of free throws for the Falcons with nine seconds to go and two more with three seconds left for the final margin.The Wolves were frigid from the floor in the first five minutes going 0-for-7 and scoring just one free throw while Messiah pushed out to a 13-1 lead.  Matt Globowski led the Falcons with six points on the run and Sareyka added five.Alvernia's first bucket of the game came at 11:42 when junior  scored to make it 15-5 Messiah.Youngkin followed with a 3, but a quick 8-4 Messiah run put the guests up 10, 23-13 with 8:10 left in the first half. hit a pair of 3s and Rob Young, Jr. added another as the Wolves scored nine quick points from beyond the arc in just over a minute to cut the Messiah lead down to four points.With 90 seconds left in the half Youngkin knocked down a 3 to give Alvernia its first lead of the game, 34-33.  Messiah took it back with a Sareyka jumper, but Alvernia scored the final four points of the half for a 38-35 lead at the ...

(Nov. 10, 2018) - Junior  scored 11 second half points, and 15 points overall, to lead Alvernia University (2-0) to a 79-58 win over Penn College of Technology (0-1) in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.The Golden Wolves led wire-to-wire after jumping out to 4-0 lead following layups from  (Mount Pleasant) and  in the first minute of play.Alvernia would go on to build a 17 point lead over the next 18 minutes, entering the half with a 44-27 lead.The Wildcats came out of the second half fast, going on a 11-2 run to cut the deficit to six 15 minutes remaining in the game.Alvernia then went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to extend its lead to 15.The Golden Wolves then held the Wildcats scoreless for a six minute period to take a 28 point lead, their largest lead of the game, with 2:37 to play.Alvernia allowed nine more from the Wildcats over the final two minutes to take the 79-58 win.Alvernia finished 10-26 from behind the arc and was 19-23 from the line.The Golden Wolves were led by Youngkin with 15 points.   • Second Half Run Carries LVC Past Alvernia, 82-58

    (Taylor, Alvernia) Reading, Pa. (Jan. 20, 2018) - Lebanon Valley College (12-6, 6-3) started the second half with a 19-2 run on its way to an 82-58 win over Alvernia University (8-10, 3-6) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court. The Dutchmen opened the second half with a layup from Sam Light, then after a pair of free throws from Alvernia freshman , LVC ran off 17 straight points to take control. The Golden Wolves went 0-for-7 from the floor with a pair of turnovers during the five minutes stretch that left the Dutchmen with a 52-29 lead.  The lead stayed at 20 or more the rest of the way. Light finished with a game-high 28 points and Andy Orr had 26.  Alvernia got a team-high 20 points from sophomore Nick Youngkin, 11 points and 10 boards from Gordon, and 10 points from . LVC put together the first significant run of the day scoring 11 straight points midway through the first half to take a 23-13 lead.  The two post players, Orr and Andrew Eberhart scored four points apiece and Light capped it with a jumper. Youngkin scored the next six for the Golden Wolves and added a bucket during an 8-2 run that cut the gap back down to four points, 25-21.  It was down to one point following a  (Mount Pleasant) free throw, but LVC scored six of the last seven points in the half for a 33-27 lead at the break.   • Shippen Scores 1,000 As Alvernia Cruises Past Berks, 99-60

      (Taylor, Alvernia) Reading, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2018) - Senior scored a game-high 25 points and went over 1,000 for his career as Alvernia University (5-8) knocked off Penn State-Berks (1-10) by a 99-60 final Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's basketball at Jack McCloskey Court. Needing 19 points to become the 26th player to reach 1,000 career points at Alvernia, Shippen tallied 18 in the first half as Alvernia built a 54-24 lead at the break.  His jumper in the lane with 15:44 left in the game gave him 20 for the game and put him over a grand for his career. Berks kept pace early, but a Nick Youngkin 3 with 14:22 left in the first half to give Alvernia a 19-10 lead.  The lead swelled to 17 points, 31-14, on a free throw with 6:50 left in the first half, and the Golden Wolves got bookend 3s from Shippen and fellow senior-and 1,000 point scorer- in capping the half with a 16-5 run. Berks hit a 3 after the Shippen jumper early in the second half, but Alvernia answered with nine straight points and kept the lead over 30 the rest of the way. joined Shippen in double digits with 14 points and  (Mount Pleasant) added 13 points in 14 minutes.  Freshman recorded his first career double-double in his first career start with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
