After seven seasons as the head football coach at Laurel High School Joey Jones has decided to step away from football and focus on his growing family.
“I have five kids under the age of seven and they are starting to play sports of their own and have other activities,” Jones said.
Jones addressed his team on Wednesday morning and gave them the news.
The Bulldogs were 49-26 under Jones winning two Class A state titles in 2021 and 2022. Jones also led Laurel to three Class AA state tournament appearances after winning those state championships.
Jones said he had been thinking about it for a while and wanted to resign now so the school would have time to find a replacement ahead of next season. He informed Superintendent Shawn Larrimore this week of his decision.
Jones came to Laurel from Salisbury University where he was the quarterback coach following his career as the Seagulls QB from 2010 to 2013.
“It was the right time and I am young enough to return to coaching sometime in the future,” Jones said.
