St. Georges visited William Penn in a match that determined the Flight A championship for the season. The Colonials came away with the 36-27 victory in the match which came down to the last match of the night to decide the winner and crown the Flight A champion.

The match didn’t start until an hour later than the slated 7pm time due to the girls match, JV match, and it was Alumni Night for the Colonials as they honored wrestlers from the 70’s to the present 2000’s. However the main event was worth the wait as the match turned into an instant classic.

The excitement started early in the second match of the night at 175 lbs when Maddox Shupe of St Georges was trailing William Penn’s Youssef Badreldein 12-1 in the second period. Shupe with the backing of the crowd was able to rally back when he had Badreldein on his back close to a pin, but the buzzer saved him at the end of the period. In the third quarter Shupe trailed by one point 12-11, but decided to end the match as he sunk in the Half Nelson to roll Youseff over to get the pin.

A few matches later at 106 lbs the Hawks Frank Zitofsky faced off with the Colonials Adrian Austin as Zitofsky jumped out to the early 4-1. Austin was able to battle back to force overtime. In overtime Austin wasted no time as he shot in, scooped Zitofsky and took him down for the takedown and the win.

At 120 lbs Maddox Stanley of St Georges led William Penn’s Bennie Phillips 9-2 early in the first quarter. Phillips was fighting off Stanley who was trying to set in a Half Nelson as Bennie reversed it as he rolled Maddox over to successfully pin him for the win.

The excitement continued at 150 lbs as Jamir Ross of Penn faced off with Nicholas DiTomasso. Ross had a 6-3 with time running out in the third period. DiTomasso had just 42 seconds left to get the win and help his team pull closer to the Colonials. With 25 seconds left DiTomasso shot in and got the takedown for the 7-6 victory which pulled the Hawks within three points 30-27.

It all came down to the last match of the night to decide the winner with the 157 lbs match between Ezra Reyes of St. Georges and Camar Miller-Brown of William Penn. Camar jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Reyes didn’t give up. Reyes slipped in on Miller-Brown and seemed to have him locked up on a cradle. As Reyes tried to roll over Miller-Brown was able to slip the cradle to get the pin to seal the 36-27 victory for the Colonials.
