Conrad Red Wolves advanced to the DIAA Baseball state championship with a 5-2 win over the Sussex Central Golden Knights. Timely hitting and strong pitching propelled Conrad in the victory.
Conrad, trailing 1-0 took the lead in the top of the third as they sent four players across the plate. Jacob DeBoef singled to start off the inning. Followed by a sacrifice bunt from Jack Fleetwood and a single from Mark Spoor Max Hansen then singled, scoring one run while Justin O’Connor followed with a single to advance the runners.
AJ Shute then followed by hitting a sacrifice fly, scoring Spoor. The big hit in the inning came from Dylan Pirrung who tripled, scoring two more runs for the Red Wolves as they took the 4-1 lead. They then added an insurance run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from Shute that cleared the center field wall.
For the Conrad Red Wolves starting pitcher Brady Wardell that was all the run support he needed. Wardell threw a complete game allowing 2 runs 1 earned on 4 hits. He struck out 5 and only walked 2 batters. Wardell was in complete control the whole game on the mound.
Conrad collected 9 hits in the game. Jon Downes and Shute each collected two hits to lead the Red Wolves. Brayden Tidwell, Gage Willkins, Peter Onuschak, and Jace Jarmon each collected one hit for Sussex Central.
Conrad Cape Henlopen advances to the 2025 DIAA Baseball state championship and will face the Cape Henlopen this Sunday June 1st at Frawley Stadium. Game time is set for 7pm.
