It has been 10 years since Sanford Head Coach Khallid Hart won the state championship as a player for Sanford. Now he has won his first as a head coach coaching his little brother and team leader Khareem Hart. Khareem was the catalyst in the championship game as he led the way for Sanford scoring 15 points to help the Warriors defeat reigning state champion Dover Senators 37-34.
Coach Khallid told us “He showed the heart of a champion and hiis teammates believed in him” when asked about his little brother’s performance in the championship game. Khareem hit three big three’s and went on his own personal 10-0 run against Dover late in the third quarter.
Khreem told us “My coaches and teammates had confidence in me. I knew I had to make some shots in order for us to win this game.”
The game featured two of the best defensive teams in the state which helped lead to the low scoring affair. The lowest scoring game in the history of the state championship game was in 2016 when Sanford defeated St Georges 39-32 a combined 71 points. This year’s score of 37-34 also combined for a 71 point total tying the lowest score in the history of the game. The two teams also forced a staggering 49 combined turnovers.
The last time these two teams met in the state championship was 2019 as Sanford defeated the Senators 48-45. The two teams were set for a rematch in 2020, but the Covid pandemic shut down the world which never allowed a rematch to be played.
