No. 3 Sanford Knocks off No. 1 St. Elizabeth’s as they look to regain the top seed

The No. 3 Sanford Warriors looked to regain the No. 1 seed in the state with a win over now No. 1 St Elizabeth’s Vikings. The Warriors held the No. 1 ranking for numerous weeks to start the season before suffering consecutive losses to in-state opponents.The Warriors used a big 20-5 third quarter to defeat the top seeded Vikings 53-47.

The Vikings took a 29-20 nine point lead into half time, but were unable to hold that lead in the second half. The Warriors came out in the third quarter and stepped up their defensive intensity while attacking the basket against the Vikings. Those second half adjustments by the Warriors led to them outscoring the Vikings 20-5. They were able to erase the nine point deficit to a 40-34 six point lead.

Late in the third quarter the Vikings were able to bring the game within one point 42-41

when Kenneth Walker Jr. hit the first of his two free throws, but missed the second with an opportunity to tie the game up with just under three minutes to go. 

Both teams exchanged a few baskets in remaining minutes before a couple of missed shots by the Vikings forced them to foul the Warriors. Sanfors hit five of their last six free throws to seal the victory. The Warriors were led by A’Zir Ellegood with 14 points, while Khareem Hart added 13. St. Elizabeth was led by Kiyen Alexander who led all scorers with 19 points.
